Depression Treatment

At Crownview Psychiatric Institute, we understand that depression is more than sadness, low mood, or lack of motivation that passes relatively quickly.

The symptoms of clinical depression can be disruptive, disturbing, and, in some cases, intolerable. They can prevent an individual from participating in the essentials of daily life, from healthy eating to getting enough exercise to keeping up with basic personal hygiene. Severe symptoms of depression can have a significant negative impact on things like work and academic performance, family relationships, and the ability or desire to socialize or participate in recreational activities and favorite hobbies.

In some cases, people with depression feel the symptoms take away everything they love and makes them happy.

We understand. We can help you get back to the life you want to live, based on your choices and your personal vision of happiness.

We specialize in creating a compassionate environment that’s ideal for supporting patients with complex, severe depressive disorders, including patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and depression that co-occurs alongside other mental health disorders. With innovative treatments and intuitive, skilled, and empathetic clinicians, we can help people with depressive disorders start on the path to healing and recovery.

Effective, Evidence-Based Treatment for Depression

Our clinical team has extensive experience treating patients with the following depressive disorders:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD)
  • Treatment-resistant depression (TRD)
  • Persistent depressive disorder (PDD)
  • Seasonal depressive disorders (SAD)
  • Peripartum/postpartum depression (PPD)

Upon intake and admission to a Crownview Psychiatric Institute treatment program, our clinical staff administers a comprehensive psychiatric assessment to ensure your diagnosis is accurate. Next, our clinicians take the time to learn all about you. To design an effective individualized treatment plan we need to know who you are and help you identify what you want out of treatment.

Based on principles established by the Unified Protocol for treating emotional disorders, we design a plan to help you:

  1. Understand the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
  2. Develop the ability to tolerate challenging situations.
  3. Learn and practice practical strategies and skills to manage disruptive patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior associated with depressive disorders.

Evidence shows that the most effective approach to treating patients with depressive disorder involves an integrated, whole person approach. Most plans will include a combination of psychotherapy, medication, education, community/family support, and adjunct/complementary services.

Innovative Treatment for Complex or Treatment-Resistant Depressive Disorders

In some cases, depression does not respond well to a traditional combination of medication and psychotherapy. When a person diagnosed with MDD attempts at least two courses of treatment with psychotherapy and antidepressants, they may receive a diagnosis for treatment-resistant depression.

At Crownview Psychiatric, we have experience with three new therapeutic techniques for complex and treatment resistant depression, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA):

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

This non-invasive brain stimulation technique offers relief when traditional treatments aren’t effective.

IV Ketamine and SPRAVATO®

These medications, approved by the FDA in 2019, can also offer symptom relief for complex or treatment-resistant depressive disorders when traditional antidepressant medications aren’t effective.

In addition to those innovative treatment options, your customized plan for depression may include, but will not be limited to, the following therapeutic techniques and approaches:

Psychotherapy:

Medication:

  • Antidepressants
  • Mood stabilizers

Education:

  • Life skills workshops
  • Work skills workshops
  • The science behind depression and depression treatment
  • Nutrition for health and mood
  • Relationships dynamics/family dynamics
  • Communication skills workshops

Adjunct Therapies:

  • GeneSight® testing
  • Psychological Testing
  • IV vitamins

Complementary/Expressive Therapies:

  • Music therapy
  • Wellness groups
  • Meditation and breathwork
  • Yoga
  • Mindfulness
  • Singing bowls

In addition, we offer case management services with wraparound support that enable you to get the most out of your treatment, and access social services related to housing, food, academic, medical, and vocational support.

Compassion, Community, and Connection: Core Components of Healing

With the direct input of your treatment peers, therapists, and counselors, you can learn how to apply what you learn in treatment to improve functioning in daily life. At Crownview, we create an atmosphere of compassion, empathy, and connection. We’re committed to building a supportive, nurturing community dedicated to your individual healing and growth.

What Level of Care is Right for You?

When you receive a diagnosis for clinical depression, you’ll most likely also receive a referral to a specific level of care, such as intensive Outpatient (IOP), partial Hospitalization (PHP), or inpatient residential treatment.

The level of care that best matches your diagnosis depends on several factors. In collaboration with your Crownview treatment team, you’ll identify the following:

  1. The intensity of your symptoms.
  2. The frequency and duration of your symptoms.
  3. The level of disruption they cause in your daily life.

These factors – as well as your treatment history and other practical factors – will help you decide on the appropriate level of care. For instance, if your symptoms are severe very disruptive, and you’ve tried outpatient therapy, or intensive outpatient therapy, you may need to step up to a more immersive level of care, such as partial hospitalization treatment or inpatient residential treatment.

When symptoms of depression such as persistent low mood, anger, irritability, pessimism, hopelessness, and the desire to completely withdraw from any contact with the outside world make daily life difficult or impossible to manage effectively, spending time in immersive, residential inpatient treatment, away from the ongoing pressures of daily life, may be exactly what you need to find balance and get back on track.

At Crownview Psychiatric Institute, we’ll be by your side as you navigate this entire process. We meet where you are, help you develop the tools you need to manage your symptoms, and empower you to reach your destination: living a full and productive life on your own terms.
